Kampung Kampus: Try Out Green Initiatives & Village-Style Activities Away From The Bustling Life In Singapore

When we think of environmental activities such as wood carving and all-natural, pesticide-free farming, we tend to envision larger countries that have the landscape and market for such enterprises; in other words, not Singapore.

Created by Ground-Up Initiative, Kampung Kampus challenges this impression with a new community space to partake in a host of environmental activities and green initiatives. Here’s where you’ll see environmental awareness in a whole new light.

I see it as a great chance to get away from busy city life, and to just chill for a moment.

Don’t get turned off too quickly by the idea of learning because the workshops here make for great date ideas and fun family activities for all age groups.

You can check out all the initiatives and programmes on the website, or on Facebook, but here are a couple of particularly notable ones.

Touchwood Workshops

Try your hand at woodworking with the adults-only Joinery Workshop by Touchwood, or sign your kids up for the My Woody Friend workshop to make adorable puppets out of simple materials.

Dates: Refer to respective registration websites

Prices: Vary with programme type – $40 (kids), $80 (all ages) and $150 (adults)

Learn About Sustainable Urban Farming With Farmily

If you’ve got an interest in farming, you can check out Farmily, which specialises in organic produce and aqua-culture farming.

You can volunteer by taking part in the Balik Kampung programme on Saturdays, to understand how this social initiative satisfies the demand for quality and chemical-free food, while providing jobs for senior citizens.

Dates: Refer to registration website

Price: Free

As the name “Kampung Kampus” suggests, it is a place where a village or rather, the outdoor sites, become the learning zone so you that can connect directly with Mother Nature.
