Spotify Saturdays with Singaporean Actor & Singer Benjamin Kheng

When it comes to local personalities, Benjamin Kheng needs no introduction. From his The Sam Willow days, to The BenZi Project with equally well-loved YouTuber Hirzi, Ben has more than proved his creative prowess.

Multi-talented and highly favoured, Benjamin has also dabbled in theatre, unbeknownst to some. We distinctly remember him in Wild Rice’s iteration of The Emperor’s New Clothes, and Ken Chow in the Ah Boys To Men Musical.

Between his career and engagement to Naomi (congrats, Ben!), some true gems that Ben has gifted us with would definitely be the hilarious Tik Toks only he can pull off.

This week, we sat down with Benjamin on the 5 tracks that make up his life.

Tell us your name, and how you’d describe yourself to someone whom you’re meeting for the first time.

I’m Benjamin. I have Mongolian ancestry and am terrible in the kitchen (those two things have no relation).

What are the five tracks of your life?

1. He Lives In You – The Lion King Musical
2. Ocean – John Butler Trio
3. Nothing – Bruno Major
4. You’ll Be In My Heart – Phil Collins
5. Resolution – Matt Corby

Why would you consider this playlist to be significant to you?

I could have gone with a cooler, trendier 5-track list, but these songs made me fall in love, in different ways, with different passions and people.

Pick one track and tell me your fondest/most interesting memory of it.

Listening to, and watching, He Lives In You (from The frickin’ Lion King Musical) for the first time made my heart leap out of my chest and onto the stage. I’d never fallen in love so quickly with the spirit of something (most likely performing, maybe adults dressed as big cats). Since then I’ve tried to delete it from my playlists and I can never do it.

If I had asked you this question 10 years ago, what is the one track that your then-self would have picked as your favourite?

Dare You To Move by Switchfoot, or something from Coldplay. But Dare You To Move was my frickin’ anthem growing up. I wore a choker over my Asian version of surfers hair, wore bell bottoms and wanted to ChAnGe ThE WoRlD. But it’s such a banger of a song.
