My favourite time of the year is here again, where snow (or rather, rain) falls and everybody appears to be in a festive mood. The Christmas decorations along Orchard Road embody the spirit of the holiday every year without fail, with beautiful lights and amazing sculptures; it’s like a Christmas exhibition out there!
This year is no different, with Santa and his reindeers at Orchard to help light up your Instagram feed. I know you’ll likely be posting a picture on the ‘gram this 25 December 2017, so why not make sure it’s as magical as can be?
Here are some ideas to get the best pictures out of your Christmassy walk along Orchard Road this 2017.
Starting at ION Orchard, you’ll already see a giant Pandora Xmas tree once you step out onto street level.
Take a photo with the logo to show that #brandloyalty. And guys, if your girlfriend shows you a photo of her with that tree, I think you get the hint of what she wants for Christmas.
Just beside the Pandora tree and right outside the mall, is a whole exhibition called “Voyage Into Enchantment”. Hop on the “ION Orchard Express” and feel like you’re taking a trip to the North Pole.
Tired of trains? Then take a picture with a hot air balloon instead!
The fairy lights make it a very Insta-worthy attraction, and you may actually have to queue up to take a photo. It’s not everyday that you get a hot air balloon “floating” around Orchard.
Moving on from ION, it’s a snowy and white Christmas affair outside Wisma Atria. First, take a picture while standing under a canopy of hanging fairy lights. It’s going to give you a very nice bokeh effect.
You’ll spot lots of white reindeers and trees around to make you feel like you’re really in a winter wonderland. The white lights are also great for taking an angelic photo.
Walk down along Ngee Ann City, and you’ll see a few displays as well. An interesting one is a cluster of light-up Xmas presents made of wire. Cool art right there!
However, some of the best are near Somerset. The decorations outside Orchard Gateway are insane! Effort was definitely put into this.
The theme is an extraterrestrial Christmas (go figure), and so you’ll find aliens and Santa in spacesuits (but of course), along with a glowing blue wall that kind of gave me a Stranger Things vibe; fancy a visit to the Upside Down, anyone?
Did I also mention a fully-equipped sleigh with reindeers ready to take off into the clouds? Yeah, you can pretend to be Santa, sitting at the back and preparing to drop off some gifts.
A little further down at Orchard Central is where couples can soak in the romantic atmosphere. It’ll really make you want to sing “All I Want For Christmas Is You”.
Beautiful trees and lights, and a lovely bridge that couples can cross to take a photo; like the story of The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.
There’s also a little area where you can peep through a window like you’re in a cafe, and pretend like it’s snowing outside. I know… Singaporeans all just get some kind of snow fomo this time of year, don’t we?

The streets of Orchard are always something to admire when December comes around. It’s awesome that I can do my Christmas shopping while taking in the wonderful sights, which seem to be getting better and better each year.
Walk through this beautiful part of Singapore this year with people you care about, and take pictures for the ‘gram. Just remember not to neglect your loved ones, as Christmas is best spent with them (and not your phone).
Besides, someone’s going to need to help you take all these photos, right?
