The view surrounding Marina Bay is both breathtaking and majestic. When night falls, this site which is home to the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands and many other attractions, transforms itself into a spectacular sight with the gorgeous city lights as a backdrop.
But it gets better – from now till 26 March, the bay will be set aglow with i Light Marina Bay 2017 taking place. In its fifth edition and equipped with the theme,”Light and Nature”, i Light will feature 20 sustainable light art installations created by homegrown artists and artists from around the world.
We scoured the entire bay to bring you five recommendations on where you can take some ‘”Instagram-worthy” shots. If you are using a camera, remember your tripod!
1. HYBYCOZO by Yelena Filipchuk & Serge Beaulieu
“HYBYCOZO” is a complicated creation, featuring the ideas of science, technology, geometry, materials and the essence of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” (the artists’ favourite book).
Simply lean closer, rest one arm on the exhibit, then gaze into the meticulously carved installation. The lights change, and we recommend waiting for the right colour (preferably white) before you snap a shot.
Location: Esplanade Waterfront beside Gluttons’ Bay
2. The Colourful Garden Of Light by TILT
A work from France, “The Colourful Garden Of Light’ explores the peculiar relationship between nature and city, transforming the barren Clifford Square into a garden brimming with peonies and multicoloured butterflies.
I swear with its slow, hypnotic fluttering movements and gorgeous colour changing, I could stare at this installation for the entire night.
Location: Clifford Square
3. Horizontal Interference by Katarzyna Malejka & Joachim Slugocki
The brainchild of two young and talented Polish artists, “Horizontal Interference” connects trees together with colourful cords, giving birth to the idea of “moving in the wind” when illuminated at night.
A rather crowded exhibit, it took us awhile before we were able to snap a shot without anyone cramming into our picture. We recommend phrasing your Instagram caption along the lines of, “My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive. ”
Location: Mist Walk
4. Uncle Ringo
A household name since the 1980s, our favourite carnival host joins i Light this year, bringing us a bit of nostalgia from our childhood. Make full use of the fluorescent lighting and strike a pose in front of the various games and rides.
Times: 5pm – 11pm (Sun to Thurs), 4pm – 12am (Fri & Sat)
Location: Bayfront Event Space
5. Passage Of Inner Reflection by Raffles College Of Higher Education
This tunnel-like light installation effectively mixes the essence of light and nature while encouraging visitors to interact with it. All this inevitably results in an IG-worthy shoot that you shouldn’t miss.
It’s almost impossible to find this place vacant but if you arrive early you may stand a chance.
Location: Beside Glutton’s Bay, Esplanade
Dates & Times: Now till 26 March 2017, 7.30pm – 11pm (extended to 12am on Fri & Sat nights)
Price: Admission is free
