The HYPE&STUFF and SETHLUI.com Teams Share Their Work From Home Set Ups

As the first week of Circuit Breakers come to a close, it’s already telling of who will emerge victorious after this one month of partial lockdown, and who will not. Different people are taking to this work from home situation very differently, and it shows. Well, if it’s any help, productivity advice always points towards having a purposeful work set up at home in order to put oneself into a work frame of mind.

For some of us, we’re lucky enough to already have whatever we need at home prior to this mad Circuit Breaker rush. For others, the situation at home is less than ideal, and we’d have to do what us Singaporeans do best—to tahan, or make do.

Having not seen my dear colleagues for close to half a month now, I checked in with some of them to see how they were doing with the work from home arrangements. Here’s what the HYPE&STUFF and SETHLUI.com teams have shared regarding their work set ups, starting with none other than Yours Truly.

Vera, Staff Writer at HYPE&STUFF

Name 5 essential items you must have at your work set up, and why.

1. I’m going to skip over the laptop, because it’s a given. The first item I’d have to pick is a candle—specifically, Bahama Breeze from Yankee Candle. My work station has to be pleasant-smelling.
2. A big mug of water or tea. Hydration is oh-so important.
3. My scheduler book. Call me old-fashioned, but I still hand write appointments and to-do lists in a scheduler book. Ever year, I take extra effort in picking one out. I’d be so lost without it.
4. Potted plants or flowers. I always make sure there’s some sort of greenery around my desk when I work because it relaxes me, plus it makes the place look so much more comfortable.
5. Pictures of those I love. You can’t see it from here, but my right wall is plastered with photographs of my closest friends. I love people so much, and being reminded of the ones I love the most always make me happy.

Reality often differs from expectation, and most of us don’t get the dream work set up we want. Tell me about how you’ve compromised and made the best out of this work from home situation.

Ideally, my study desk would be super neat with lots of organisers. I love trays and shelves and anything that helps organise. But as you can tell, that’s hardly the case. So I make do by adding my own drawers. Though it can sometimes be hard to keep things neat because I’m so busy all the time.

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

The latest addition to my table of course—this Princess Anna thermal container. I actually literally just received it as a birthday present from the interns at the HYPE&STUFF and SETHLUI.com teams. It just makes my heart so happy not only because I love Anna, but because of the people behind this gift.

1. Cup of water
2. iPad
3. Mouse
4. Keyboard
5. 34 inch screen (very oddly specific)

This work set up is exactly what I require of a work from home situation due to the nature of my job as a freelancer. This is the best work set up I can imagine for myself.

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

The wooden toy below my monitor. It’s a gift from a friend from Copenhagen which I like because it’s so whimsical. Unlike me. *laughs*

Name 5 essential items you must have at your work set up, and why.

1. Besides the obvious laptop, I have to have a either a grande Pure Matcha Latte with oat milk from Starbucks or one that I make myself. It’s a caffeine and mood booster to help me power through the lazy afternoon.
2. A tall pitcher of water is essential. Having a water readily available throughout the day helps to keep hydrated.
3. Sticky notes – I have mine in bright yellow, it’s helps draw attention to the day’s tasks and also looks great with my wall.
4. A book is always around my table be it fiction or non-fiction for inspiration and to take a break.
5. A killer playlist with either chill or loft beats, or Pop-ish songs to get into that ‘flow’ state. I like ChilledCow on YouTube.

Ideally, I would have liked an entirely minimal desk with nothing but given my magpie tendencies, it’s not going to happen. So, I have to be truly strict about what I keep on my desk and things that will help me and not hinder my work.

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

It has to be the funky, weird little ceramic pot that I pocketed from a sale at a local plant store. I don’t know exactly what it is but I love the quirkiness and eccentricity of this odd little bauble.

Leo, Writing Intern at HYPE&STUFF

Name 5 essential items you must have at your work set up, and why.

1. Coffee – I need it to start my day right.
2. Water – hydration is a must throughout the day.
3. Laptop – for work and entertainment needs.
4. Phone – to stay connected with my friends while I take breaks from work.
5. Earpiece – when my family gets too rowdy as I work, I listen to music to help me drown out the noise and stay focused.

In terms of compromise, i would say my compromise is of the mental sort—I typically don’t work from home due to the lack of personal space and lack of inspiration and motivation to write. Now, somedays I am more motivated than ever to work from home to escape the reality that is being confined at home with my family

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

My coffee, because I absolutely cannot function without caffeine. And I truly do enjoy a cuppa—from the act of making it to consuming it.

Ke Wei, Video Intern at SETHLUI.com

1. My monitor. It can be any monitor, really. Editing videos on a small screen is torture for the eyes.
2. The Nintendo switch, to jump in for quick matches on NBA 2K or Animal crossing, during lunch time or after work.
3. A good chair. It’s what you’re sitting on right?
4. My MacBook Pro. It’s essentially powering my whole setup. While the trackpad is great and all, this actually brings me to my next item.
5. A keyboard because of my Mac’s sticky keys.

Working from home definitely has it’s limitations. A huge boo boo is having to work around the fact that I rely on office equipment to shoot. The compromise that the company has come to is to pass the equipment to the next person who shoots a video with you in order to minimise the excessive contact between colleagues and public.

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

I’m grateful for the fact that I can look at my current set-up and know that it’s mine. Many people in this world are facing issues, such as poverty and famine, that I cannot even begin to comprehend and I’m just very lucky to be able to do what I’m doing now.

1. Water.
2. AirPods.
3. Laptop riser, is that what it’s called? *laughs* You know that thing that lifts your laptop?
4. Table
5. Chair. Ok, lol. I’m a simple woman.

I love working from home and it’s not a new thing for me though. So like, I’m all good with the arrangement to be honest.
Oh! Okay one of the compromises is having to shift office meetings. That is all.

What’s the one thing here that always sparks joy when you work?

Thing like a physical item? Then it would have to be my captain America toy. Hahaha.
