D’Underground Lounge & Club is bringing the good times back to Orchard, nestled in the basement of The International Building next to the newly renovated Thai Embassy.
A place for respite in the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, D’Underground Lounge & Club veiled in a posh lounge setting infuses a soothing experience with uplifting Jazz-Funk music.
Orchard Road isn’t the first name you think of when it comes to night life in Singapore, so when I first heard of D’Underground Lounge & Club launching in the middle of the city, I was excited.
I had my reservations about the location as it’s near the infamous Orchard Towers and other well-patronised establishments but they were cleared the moment I entered.
Hand-Drawn Wall Murals
Dimly lit, with an air of relaxation wafting around me, I took my first steps down the flight of LED-striped stairs into the main lounge area where I was greeted with the most beautifully painted murals on the open-brick surface that decorated the walls.
These state of the art light arrangements are unique to D’Underground, with a timer-based cycle of scarlet red and royal blue showering the murals in all its glory. I was thoroughly impressed with the interior.
Wood furnishings coupled with lush leather seats made for a very elegant combination, and there was ample seating and space to move about.
This fresco hugged the back corner of the lounge that suited a more “private” affair. Situated away from the main human traffic, look to grab a table here if you do not want to be screaming your head off the entire night while making conversation.
Happy Hours & Golden Hours
I had my go-to Coke and Whiskey as I looked through the offerings on the menu; Happy Hours run from 6pm till 9pm and Golden Hours start after that from 9pm to two in the morning.
You can expect a typical drinks menu as well as a vast selection of wines and bottled liquor, so pick a poison for the night while you groove along to the music.
Jazzy Entertainment
DJ Genga who hails from Perth, Australia, had a sick arrangement of jazz and funk vibes to kick off the party for the night.
The moustached, self-proclaimed, Ginger Ninja, was at the tables throughout the night — listening to old but gold classics from the 1980s was a welcome change to the raging EDM-centric music played in other hot spots around the island.
When I thought it couldn’t get any better sonically, a small rumble in the back leading up to the live band welcomed the Jackson Twinz, a jazz/soul combination hailing from Atlanta who found their calling in Asia.
Decked out in sleek black suits with aviators gently balanced on the bridges of their noses, they dressed to impress.
The management at D’Underground really outdid themselves when they brought this duo from their escapades in China to sing at the club that night.
With voices that could uplift even the dreariest of souls, they moved the crowd with their velvet-like vocals that accompanied tunes from the Golden Age. Always trying to involve the audiences, they owned the stage with choreographed moves and hit every falsetto.
Here’s where you should be if you’re looking to soak in tunes of good ol’ evergreen hits in a chilled setting and while the night away in Orchard’s latest nightspot.
