Have you seen shoes with sensory features? This off-the-chart design by our very Off-the-wall Vans shows such features through its Vans Autism Awareness collection. Designed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mind, this footwear collection is created with sensory-inclusive features, such as touch, sight, and sound.
Established in 1966, Vans has been a fervent champion of individuality and self-expression. Through this meaningful project, Vans hopes to foster inclusivity by embracing the unique qualities of all people.
Senses are the central focus of this collection as sensory issues often accompany autism. In ASD, the stimuli to senses are either heightened or dulled. Therefore, this collection hopes to bring awareness and mindfulness to our senses through the intricate designs of the shoes.
New footwear provides a touch element through employing Vans’ Comfycush technology that provides all-day comfort with their soft-cushioned soles. Also, the calming colour palette is used to provide a relaxing setting through sight. Designed down to the details, slip-on or single-strap hook-and-loop closures are available to encourage easy wear-on abilities and empower the child with some independence. The shoe sizes run from toddlers to adults.
A minimum of US$100,000 proceeds from this collection has been pledged to A.Skate Foundation. The non-profit foundation aims to teach skateboarding to 4,000 children with autism. The collection is now available at the Vans online store.
