Singapore Tourism Board teamed up with Barbie in celebration of Barbie’s 60th Anniversary to showcase home-grown talents in their ‘Passion Made Possible’ and ‘You Can Be Anything’ campaigns.
18 local creatives and design brands, all from various disciplines including illustration, embroidery and fashion design have shared their innovatively designed and customised Barbie doll outfits. Among these talents are fashion designer and stylist, Josiah Chua, lifestyle brand Onlewo and Jian Yang whose extensive 12,000 Barbie doll collection ranks among the world’s largest.
The designers were challenged to push their creative boundaries using the inspiration of Singapore culture, street culture or other unique ideas.
Be awed at the different aspects of Singapore culture these designers adopted for their creations—from the use of flowers and spices commonly found in local cuisine like turmeric and butterfly pea flowers as fabric dye, utilising the intricate tile patterns found in Peranakan houses as a signature print or pattern.
If you stand by the saying “You are what you eat,” then you’ll find humour in the chicken rice Barbie outfit creation; complete with sambal for a hat.
The public can view the 60 Barbie dolls these individuals have customised at *SCAPE, #02-14 from now till 30 November 2019. The exhibition is free admission and open from 10.30am to 10.30pm daily.
