Konnichiwa! One of Japan’s most popular winter festivals, the Sapporo Yuki Matsuri (Sapporo Snow Festival), is back for its 68th year this February 2017.
Started in 1950 when six students built six snow statues in Odori Park, the Sapporo Snow Festival has grown into quite a spectacle today. Attracting more than 2 million visitors every year from Japan and other countries, the Sapporo Snow Festival is a MUST GO winter affair.
The festival takes place at three main sites:
Located along a 1.5km stretch in Odori Park, visitors can expect to be greeted with the festival’s major ice and snow sculptures. This year’s features include “Decisive Battle: Final Fantasy in Snow”, “Star Wars 40th Anniversary: Star Wars in White”, and more.
The light-up will take place from sunset till 10pm throughout the festival days.
Under the theme “Enjoy the Ice”, visitors will be able to touch and ride certain ice sculptures, have drinks at an ice bar, and take photos at the illumination street in one of Sapporo’s largest entertainment districts.
Light-up will take place from sunset till 11pm, except on 12 February when it will be switched off at 10pm.
This year, several new attractions will be installed at the community dome at the Tsudome site. These include “Snow Foot Golf”, which is a fusion sport of soccer and golf; and “Bumper Ball”, where you can tuck yourself into a giant ball and roll around in the snow.
Not forgetting several slides that you can enjoy together with your friends and family.
The community dome opens from 9am to 5pm (some attractions close at 4pm).
