Time flies and we’ve only got a few months left of 2017. Ladies, if you’re sick of your wardrobe by now but you have no idea what to splurge on during your next shopping haul (or your weekly shopping trips), I’ve got you covered. Whenever I am scrolling through Instagram, I get so inspired when I see the outfits by fashion bloggers and clothing brands.
So I’ve decided to curate a list of fashionable items that can be rocked by models and ordinary folks (like me) alike. From clothing to bags to shoes, here are 11 female fashion trends of 2017 that you gotta own before the year is up:
1. Gingham Clothing
Yes, don’t worry about looking like your mama’s table cloth because gingham is fashionable again. Gingham is typically checkered in white and a bold colour. Black and white is the most versatile colour combination that can help you style a casual or smart-casual outfit.
Gingham and ruffles go awfully well together, so do check out rompers or shorts in that style if you wish to create a more feminine outfit. Other colours such as red, yellow or blue will also help you create a fun and playful look.
2. Clothes With Knots At The Chest Area
These dresses, rompers and jumpsuits with knots around the chest area will leave you cool for the summer. This look is fun, flirty and chic.
There are some limitations to wearing such clothing though. You’ll most likely have to wear stick-on bras or nipple tape to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions so if you’re too lazy to go through all that hassle, I’d suggest saving this number for special occasions.
3. Tops/Dresses With A Tie Around The Neck Area
My days as a girl guide taught me how to tie scarves and ties in an appealing manner and I can finally put that skill to good use. Having a tie around the neck area may seem extra to you but they really do add sophistication to any outfit.
That must be the reason why long-sleeved tops with ties around the neck make me feel like I’m ready to take on the world. Since the star of the outfit is the tie, just throw on any basic bottom and you’re good to go. Yay for simplicity!
4. Tie-Front Tops
Gingham and ties converge in this next staple – apart from proving my point that gingham is trendy, this beauty is a glorious tie-front top. This concept is rather similar to the one above but the tie is now situated at the bottom of the top.
A minimalist top like this goes best with a simple necklace. Some of the tops in this design might be revealing, but you can always pick one that you are comfortable with. It is the perfect top to wear when you want to look like you casually threw something on when you got out of bed in the morning.
5. Tie-Back Tops
I’m not quite done with the whole knots/ties trend which seems to be the IT thing of 2017.
The tie-back top is usually simple in the front because the highlight of the top is the ribbon at the back. Business in the front, party in the back, ya’ll.
My favourite part about tie-back tops is that they let you show off the small of your back, which is one of the most attractive parts of the female body to most people.
6. Jeans With Cut-Outs At The Bottom
Forget ripped jeans, these jeans with cut-outs instantly make any outfit look twice as cool. They are usually ripped only in the front and left untouched at the back. Lace-up footwear is popular at the moment and would go well with jeans of this design.
The best part about this pair of jeans is that you can DIY. All you need is a pair of plain jeans and scissors and you can put your crafting skills to work. I promise that this is a feasible idea and you’ll be bursting with pride when you wear your very own DIY project out.
7. Dainty Necklaces
Black wrap chokers were all the rage in 2016 but they are so passé now. Gold dainty necklaces are the it neck candy right now and they demonstrate the beauty of simplicity.
Layering is an art and everyone ought to learn how to do it. I just wished that there were more physical stores for accessories in Singapore since everyone goes to Lovisa. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you can get your dainty necklaces overseas or online.
8. Ticao Bags
Ticao bags are adorable and they go so well with casual outfits. Most Ticao bags are handwoven from abaca— the strongest of natural fibres— which means that they will last. Plus, they even grow softer and more flexible with age.
I can’t wait to get my hands on one so that I can bring it to the beach!
9. Fishnet Bags
If this is what you use to store your groceries, it is time to swap the fruits out for your belongings because the fishnet bag is in trend right now.
While it may not be practical for you to keep small items, it is minimalist and eye-catching. As long as you have no qualms letting the world know everything you hoard in your bag, get one now and hit the streets looking chic.
10. Minimalist White Sneakers
White sneakers are truly the main staple of your shoe cabinet. Whenever I am in a rush, I just grab some socks, slip into my trusty white sneakers and I am good to go.
If you think that sporting a white pair of sneakers is boring, think again. They are super versatile and you can now experiment with other aspects of your outfit, such as with your socks and top.
11. Mule Heels
Mule heels exude ’70s vibes and with them, you can keep your look casual yet classy. The block heels are extremely comfortable and the material is soft to the touch. My favourite part of the design is that it’s an easy-to-wear slip-on, which is something I desperately need when I’m too lazy to bend down to tie any laces.

It does seem that for 2017, if you want to own a trendy outfit, you would have to tie some form of a knot or a ribbon. Other than that, most of the items listed above are simple and basic, which means that they can be worn often given how easy it would be to mix and match to create different outfits.
Speaking of basic, we seem to be moving into an era of minimalism and have curated a fashion starter pack for all the staples you’re going to need. Check it out!
